Tainted Tomatoes Found in 9 States
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the outbreak of Salmonella food poisoning in nine states; tainted raw tomatoes were blamed for the poisoning in some parts of Texas and New Mexico according to reports June 3, 2008.
So far, 57 people have been sickened due to a bacteria called Saint Paul, 30 of those were in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Utah. Seventeen people have been hospitalized, but there have been no deaths reported thus far. The victims' sickness in Texas and New Mexico has been definitively linked to ingesting raw tomatoes; investigations in the other states are ongoing.
Tomato types not linked to this Salmonella outbreak are cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home. The CDC is warning consumers to avoid Roma or red round tomatoes. The elderly, infants and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to this sickness and should avoid tomatoes altogether.
