Bus Accident Kills Two, Injures 30

Earlier today, a tour bus heading for Mexico with 40 passengers overturned on a Texas highway. It tumbled off the road and ended up in the grassy median on its side. The bus was owned by Americanos, USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Greyhound Lines, Inc. (which in turn is owned by FirstGroup America).

The driver, who was evidently uninjured, said she heard a “loud pop” and lost control of the bus. It happened on southbound Interstate 37 just south of San Antonio. Two badly injured passengers were taken directly to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and four others to University Hospital in San Antonio. The twenty-four other injured passengers are reported to be in a stable condition at South Texas Regional Medical Center, although one of those people was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital.

The passengers were both American and Mexican and the bus was heading to Matamoros, Mexico from San Antonio. Two buses have been sent to the bus accident site to drive the uninjured passengers either to Mexico or back to San Antonio.

Bus Accident Cause Being Investigated

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is assisting local officers in the investigation, equipment failure must have been the cause of the accident. So far there is no reported information on what equipment failure that might have been. Nor is there any information on whether the bus had been properly maintained, or on whether the driver might have been at fault.

One thing is usually certain in a bus accident, and that is that the passengers did not cause it. A bus passenger is at the mercy of the bus driver and bus maintenance crew and perhaps the people injured in this crash will be filing lawsuits. It is not known what the condition is of the severely injured passengers.
