Defective U-Haul Trailers Claims Attorneys
Mobile, Alabama
Moving is often a stressful time when you are rushing around, trying to get things packed and loaded, and get on with your new life. You may have deadlines to meet, and you are probably dead tired by the time you go to pick up your moving truck or trailer.
The average driver does not have experience with trailers, and most of us assume that the rental company will only rent us a trailer that our vehicle can handle, and that the trailers we rent will be roadworthy. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
U-Haul, one of the most popular rental companies in the U.S. has a little publicized history or renting out defective trailers, and is the only company who will allow their trailer to be towed by an SUV.
Why towing with an SUV is not safe
Most SUVs are not heavy enough to safely tow a moving trailer. A trailer can only be safely towed by a vehicle which weighs more than the trailer. U-Haul, only requires that the towing vehicle be as heavy as the trailer, not heavier. Once the trailer is loaded it can outweigh the vehicle, and U-Haul does not inform its customers of the importance of weight ratios in towing, or that the vehicle/trailer pairing may not be safe.
U-Haul has had to defend numerous lawsuits involving Ford Explorers and no longer allow them to be used in towing its trailers.
Inadequate maintenance and brakes
U-haul has a history of failing to inspect and maintain its trailers. Its avoidance of maintenance is so extreme that they have chosen to remove advanced braking systems which could help prevent accidents, so that it will not have to maintain them.
