With the health insurance crisis, millions of Americans are uninsured or underinsured, making them an easy target for insurance companies such as the HealthMarkets subsidiaries MEGA Life and Health Insurance, Mid-West National Life Insurance Company of Tennessee, and Chesapeake Life Insurance, which promote the line "some insurance is better than no insurance at all." They promote themselves as providing affordable insurance products to those who cannot afford traditional insurance, especially students, the elderly, and the self-employed. These companies have even promoted a front organization, the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), ostensibly an advocacy group for small business owners, but in reality a front for pushing insurance policies.
To sell their insurance, they exaggerate the benefits of the policy, comparing it to more reputable companies such as Blue Cross, Blue Shield, and conceal actual information about the policy by tearing pages out of the brochures or not handing the brochures to people considering buying the policy.
People that do buy the policy find that for their $300 or more a month, they receive insurance:
- That does not cover expenses like routine care, prescription medications, or emergency room visits
- With a deductible as high as $15,000 a procedure, not a plan year
- That denies all claims exceeding the deductible or ostensibly covered, saying that they are "pre-existing conditions"
- That, when pressed, will pay only a small fraction of expenses
People with this so-called insurance find that, having paid thousands of dollars in premiums, they are left with hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses. In this case, no insurance is better than some insurance, after all!
This is truly bad faith insurance of the worst possible form. If you have been tricked into buying this insurance, know that a multi-state probe has been launched against this company. We are accepting cases in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
Because of their fraudulent practices, these companies can still make money if a majority of people pay their premiums quietly or simply cancel their policy when they find out how badly they have been deceived. The only way to stop these companies is for all of us to hold them responsible for their fraud and seek the return of money they essentially stole from us. If you were taken by one of these companies, you have not only the right but the responsibility to seek damages. We at Long and Waite P.C. are prepared to help you get the full compensation to which you are entitled. Contact us today for a free case evaluation.
