The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a "black box" warning on the metoclopramide drug Reglan. This warning was issued due to an increased risk of developing tardive dyskinesia from taking high dosages of the drug over extended periods of time. Patients have been found to develop tardive dyskinesia even after terminating use of the drug.
The "black box" warning is the strongest warning the FDA can issue. The following products have received this warning:
- Reglan tablets
- Reglan oral disintegrating tablets
- Reglan injection
- Metoclopramide oral solution
Reglan
Reglan is a pharmaceutical product used in the treatment of diabetic gastroparesis, a disorder caused by a lack of contractions of your stomach muscles. Symptoms of the disorder include:
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Persistent fullness after meals
- Loss of appetite
Reglan helps treat diabetic gastroparesis by increasing stomach contractions, which speeds up the pace your stomach empties its contents into your intestine. Reglan has also been used to treat patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disorder and cancer patients who are struggling with the adverse side effects of chemotherapy.
Reglan should always be consumed in low dosages and should never be used for more than three months.
Tardive Dyskinesia
Tardive dyskinesia is a condition that is caused by extended use of neuroleptic drugs. Neuroleptics are typically used in the treatment of psychiatric, gastrointestinal, and neurological disorders. Reglan is considered a neuroleptic drug. Studies have linked the drug to the development of this dangerous neurological condition.
Tardive dyskinesia causes people to exhibit recurring, involuntary, meaningless movements. Some common symptoms of the disorder include:
- Grimacing
- Tongue depression
- Lip smacking, puckering, and pursing
- Rapid blinking
- Rapid arm and leg movements
- Involuntary finger movements
There is no known treatment for the disorder. Whenever possible, doctors will discontinue use of the drug causing the development of tardive dyskinesia. However, in certain situations, such as with Parkinson’s disease patients, this may not be possible. While symptoms may go away in some patients after stoppage of the drug, others experience these symptoms for the rest of their lives.
If you are taking Reglan, it is important to contact your doctor at once to find out if there is a different drug that may treat your condition. If you have suffered an adverse reaction to Reglan, you can report it to the FDA’s Medwatch program.
