Zicam Defective Drug

Mobile, Alabama

For many years, people suffering with nasal congestion and allergies have turned to nasal sprays and gels to clear their sinuses and stop the constant post nasal drip associated with the common cold and sinus problems. One of the most popular over-the-counter homeopathic remedies has been Zicam, which comes in sprays, gels and swabs for adults and children. But on June 16, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the manufacturer of Zicam, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., alerting the company that more than 340 people have reported anosmia (loss of the sense of smell) after using Zicam nasal spray, gel or swabs.

If you or a loved one has suffered the adverse effects associated with Zicam products, the Alabama Zicam attorneys at Long & Waite are now taking these claims. Please contact our office, and someone will get in touch with you soon to schedule a confidential, no-cost consultation.

While losing the sense of smell may not seem like a serious condition, keep in mind that the sense of smell is associated with the sense of taste. People who cannot smell, cannot taste food or beverages. Can you imagine a lifetime of not being able to taste your favorite food or having such a diminished sense of smell that you cannot smell your partner's cologne or perfume? What is even more serious about losing the ability to smell is that you would be unable to detect gas leaks or the smell of something burning. Anosmia is a life-threatening medical condition, and Zicam, which contains zinc, is being blamed for thousands of cases of anosmia nationwide.

History of Problems with Zicam

In January 2006, a class action lawsuit against Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., the maker of Zicam, resulted in an award of $12 million to 340 plaintiffs who had lost their sense of smell. Matrixx continues to stand by its product's safety and efficacy but has stated that it may remove Zicam products from store shelves.

At the time of this writing, the FDA has not yet issued a formal recall of Zicam products. In a press release back in February 2004, Matrixx reaffirmed the safety of Zicam by claiming that reports of anosmia were “unfounded and misleading.” But the company admitted that it had not studied the drug's effect on the sense of smell.
